Behind the Scenes
The comment stung like a paper cut—small but surprisingly painful. "Now, we just have to get Dana out there doing something," my coworker had quipped, presumably in jest. Though meant to be humorous, the words settled heavily in my spirit, and I found myself mentally cataloging my daily responsibilities.
From my home office, I design promotional materials, organize events, prepare music and Bible studies, create floral arrangements, and handle correspondence for our ministry. Yet because most of this work happens behind the scenes rather than in the public eye, it's easy for others to overlook these contributions.
As I nursed my wounded pride, the Lord gently reminded me that I often treat Him the same way. When I can't see Him actively working or feel His presence, I assume He's inactive or indifferent to my situation. How shortsighted of me!
The truth is, God is always working. Think of Joseph in prison. While he languished there, seemingly forgotten, God was orchestrating events that would lead to Joseph's promotion and the preservation of His people. Or consider Esther. Before she ever approached the king, God had already set in motion a plan to protect the Jews through her courage.
The Bible tells us, "But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work" (John 5:17). God never stops working, even when we can't see the evidence. He's arranging circumstances, changing hearts, and moving mountains in ways we may never know this side of heaven.
Like a master weaver, He works with countless threads—some bright and obvious, others subtle and barely visible. While we focus on the tangled mess of threads on the underside of the tapestry, He sees the beautiful picture taking shape on top.
"For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts" (Isaiah 55:8-9).
Perhaps you're in a season where God seems distant or inactive. Take heart! Just because you can't see Him working doesn't mean He isn't. He's moving behind the scenes, orchestrating circumstances for your good and His glory.
The next time you're tempted to question God's involvement in your life, remember that some of His most significant work happens outside our view. After all, the unseen foundations often support the most beautiful structures.
And as for those who may not see or appreciate your behind-the-scenes work? Remember that your labor is not in vain.
"Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord" (1 Corinthians 15:58).
