Lessons From a Midnight Mouse

I jolted awake to the sound of scratching and scampering, followed by an excited "Woof!" from our terrier, Tess. I turned on the bedside lamp, revealing our pup's intense focus on something beneath our dresser. That's when I spotted it—a tiny grey mouse darting across our bedroom floor.

Talk about a rude awakening! Living in rural Wales, backed up against sheep pastures and woodlands, I suppose we should have expected such visitors sooner. But after two years without any uninvited guests, we'd grown complacent. Now, here we were, at midnight, watching our typically sweet-natured terrier transform into a determined hunter.

Needless to say, sleep proved elusive that night. Between Tess's vigilant guard duty and my heightened awareness of every little sound, morning couldn't come soon enough. Since then, our furry friend has made several appearances, prompting us to deploy an arsenal of deterrents—poison, repellents, and whatever else might convince our unwanted tenant to seek accommodation elsewhere.

Now comes the waiting game. Will our methods prove effective? Only time will tell.

This situation reminds me of how we often handle spiritual challenges. When faced with trials or persistent problems, we want immediate solutions. We pray fervently, seeking quick resolution, but God frequently works on a different timeline.

The Bible tells us, "Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass" (Psalm 37:7).

Just as I can't force our mouse problem to resolve overnight, we can't rush God's timing in addressing our spiritual concerns. Whether we're praying for a loved one's salvation, seeking direction in ministry, or battling persistent temptation, the solution often requires patient endurance.

Consider Joseph in the Bible. From the time God gave him dreams of leadership to their fulfillment, he endured years of waiting through slavery, false accusations, and imprisonment. Yet God was working behind the scenes, preparing him for a greater purpose.

"But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint" (Isaiah 40:31).

While we wait for answers, God isn't idle. He's working in ways we can't see, orchestrating circumstances for our good and His glory. Our job isn't to understand His timeline but to trust His wisdom and continue in faithful obedience.

So whether you're dealing with persistent problems like my unwanted house guest or facing deeper spiritual challenges, remember that patience isn't passive. It's active trust in God's perfect timing. Keep praying, keep believing, and keep watching for His hand at work. The solution may not come overnight, but it will come in His perfect time.
